“Don’t go in there, Shane. That’s Grafton’s Saloon. That’s where Ryker’s cowboys hang out. They’re tough hombres! They don’t much like us sodbusters. Ain’t safe in there.”

“Well, thanks for the warning but Ah reckon Ah’ll just mosey in there and get little Joey a soda pop. Won’t take long.”

The Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, the 106th Bishop of Rochester, Church of England, issued a similar warning in the Sunday Telegraph. Islamic extremists had turned certain parts of England into ‘no-go’ areas and there had been attempts to impose an Islamic character on other parts. It wasn’t always safe these days to mosey into Grafton’s to get little Joey a soda pop. In fact, non-Muslims like Shipstead and Stonewall Torrey might find it difficult living and working in some places because there was ‘hostility’ Hostility? In jolly old England…in the land of the Magna Charta? How absurd! The Queen would never stand for it. Well, maybe not the Queen but what about Mohammed? Yes, Mohammed! The demographics—they are a-changing.

“Qur’an 5:14 “From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We made a covenant, but they forgot and abandoned a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, stirred up enmity and hatred among them to the Day of Doom. Soon will Allah show them the handiwork they have done.”

Last January, sixteen ‘Asian’ teenagers stomped and beat 16-year-old Henry Webster in a school playground. One of them brought a claw hammer from home—a handy little weapon. A blow to the back of the head fractured Henry’s skull in three places. Amjad Qazi 19, Wasif Khan 18, and two minors aged 16 and 15 were charged. The trial is ongoing.

It was supposed to have been a one-on-one fight—Shane versus the other guy. But the other guy got on the horn or the cell phone or something or other and it was 16 to 1 and there was no Van Heflin with an ax handle to lend Henry a hand. The kid will never be the same; the hammer broke through his skull and there was a lot of fluid. The teenage assailants were described as ‘Asians.’ Sure, and it was ‘Asians’ that bombed Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. Say what one will about the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere but its proponents had the honesty to take responsibility for what they did to Manchuria, China, the Philippines and Pearl Harbor. They didn’t say ‘Asians’ did it and neither did Roosevelt. In today’s England honesty is no longer the best policy and now there are ‘no-go’ zones.

The confrontation started in a corridor at Ridgeway School in Wroughton, Swinton, and ended in a parking lot—not one of the places on the Rev. Nazir-Ali’s ‘no-go’ list, and there are a lot of them

The Reverend is the only Asian-born bishop in the Church of England. He is also the only Asian-born religious leader in the House of Lords. He is a conservative. He is closer to Churchill, Maggie Thatcher and Bennie Hill than most Anglicans. He is not afraid to speak his mind on any subject, including Islam—though it is not always appreciated. He has made frequent comments on what he calls Islam’s dual psychology—victim-hood and domination. “Their complaint,” he says, “often boils down to the position that it is always right to intervene when Muslims are victims, as in Bosnia and Kosovo, and always wrong when Muslims are the oppressors and terrorists, as with the Taliban and in Iraq.”

He hasn’t said so but there are times when the oppressors and terrorists seep out of the ‘no-go’ areas into the non-‘no-go’ areas and wreak havoc. Allah has given men sexual rights to the bodies of women and this philosophy has become a serious problem. In 2004, BBC pulled a documentary when British police warned it would increase racial tension. The documentary charged Pakistani and other Muslim men with sexually abusing young white English girls, as young as 11. BBC caved it: “In these exceptional circumstances,” they said, “Channel 4 as a responsible broadcaster has agreed to the police request.”

This did not sit well with FrontPageMag. “The number of rapes committed by Muslim men against women in the last decade is so incredibly high that it cannot be viewed as anything other than culturally implicit behavior,” wrote Martin Frost. “It is overtly reinforced and sanctioned by Islamic religious leaders who blame the victims and excuse the rapist.” Victim-hood and domination! If Britney hadn’t been wearing that short skirt…The Qur’an is the impotent Muslim’s Viagra!

If only Nazir-Ali were Shane—but he is not; nor is he Van Heflin with an ax handle; he’s more like little Joey, running around shouting, “Bang! Bang! Bang!” only the words come out like “No-go! No-go! No-go!” It might not be much—nonetheless it’s too much for his critics. When Shane called him a ‘low-down Yankee liar,” Wilson smiled and pulled on his gloves. Nazir-Ali’s less worthy foes claim victim-hood.

The Bishop has made a habit of accusing local authorities of favoritism whenever they allow mosques to broadcast Muslim calls to prayer over loudspeakers. This has greatly disturbed more than a few Muslims, including Sheikh Imam Ibrahim Mogra, senior Imam of the Muslim Council of Britain. “I cannot understand why a man of faith would have a problem with God’s name being called out in an increasingly non-religious society,” he complained. Imam, Imam, Imam, no one wants to have ‘Allahu akbar’ shouted in his face seconds before a suicide bomber turns a bus or pizza parlor into Tarawa at low tide.

“I have not seen these sort of areas,” said Stephen Lowe, the Church’s Bishop for Urban Life and Faith. “There are, no doubt, as there are in all faiths, some people of extreme persuasions. But the vast majority of the Christian and Muslim populations that I know are working happily together.” Sure, after eight hours on the production line or in the counting house or in the secretarial pool, the happy, contented, multicultural workers are off to Andy Capp’s favorite pub to hoist a few and to curse George W. Bush. They don’t go their separate ways—naw, they are too happy, too contented, too multicultural. Bishops are not noted for the calluses on their hands from wielding pick and shovel.

But it takes all kinds of critics. Hazel Anne Blears is an MP and Secretary at large for Community and Local Government. Hazel said Nazir-Ali’s comments were “pretty unhelpful. I don’t recognize the description that he’s talked about ‘no-go’ areas…If there are those areas, then maybe he needs to be a bit more specific about where he’s talking about.”

Ms Blears opposed parts of the terrorist act because it would disproportionately affect the Muslim community. The same kind of legislation was aimed at Nazis during the Second World War and negatively impacted the German community. Ms Blears was too young to oppose those restrictions. How many 7/7s were there between 1939 and 1945? Common sense prevailed during WWII. It is a scarce commodity in the 21st Century.

So far, like Shane—or Gary Cooper in High Noon—Nazir-Ali is not getting much support from the Church of England. It will take time—maybe too much time, But there is one consolation, Nazir-Ali is the only Bishop in the UK who knows the names of all the Spice Girls! And they call him a conservative!
