Islam Under Scrutiny by Ex-Muslims

The Bangladesh Man Islamists Cannot Silence

He fired the first salvo in 2003 and has been sticking his thumb in Islamist eyes ever since. Bangladeshi journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury describes himself as a "Muslim Zionist." He is unabashedly pro-US, pro-Israel, and anti-Islamist. More importantly, he remains all of that from within the Muslim world, which he refuses to leave. I have fielded any number of asylum requests for him, and he declined them all. "Retreat is not in my vocabulary," he says, for he believes that if he were to leave his country, his credibility would be gone, and Islamists would claim victory; a satisfaction he refuses to give them. "Bangladesh is my country," he says. "Let the radicals leave!"

Since 2003, we have fought not only a battle of ideas but also a battle of wills with our adversaries; and the skirmishes never end. Shoaib has been imprisoned and tortured. He has been beaten, and Islamists bombed his newspaper before they and their cronies in the ruling party seized the premises. All of this happened after Shoaib published articles that exposed the rising strength of Islamist radicals in Bangladesh, urged relations with Israel, and advocated genuine interfaith dialogue based on religious equality.

In November of that year, he was about to board a plane for Bangkok and then Israel (there are no direct flights between Dhaka and Tel Aviv), agents grabbed him. Eventually, they charged him with sedition, treason, and blasphemy, which are capital offenses and could send Shoaib to the gallows.

In 2005, however, after an intense seventeen month campaign for his freedom, Congressman Mark Kirk (R-IL) took on his case. He summoned then Bangladeshi Ambassador Shamsher M. Chowdhury to his Washington office, and the three of us had a sometimes acrimonious, always difficult, hours-long meeting. As Kirk (a member of the House Appropriations Committee) describes it, we had a "full and frank discussion," after which Dhaka agreed to free Shoaib Choudhury.

Our elation was short-lived, however, when Shamsher Chowdhury clarified that Shoaib would be freed on bail even though the ambassador had just admitted that there was no substance to the charges. To be sure, we had won the most important point: Shoaib would be free. Still, I looked up and said, "Not good enough. It's an old and tired ruse used by tyrants," I continued. "Free the dissident but keep the charges pending in order to silence him." And so we argued some more until Chowdhury relented and agreed that Dhaka would drop the charges not long after Shoaib's release.

That was three years ago. The charges remain, even though numerous Bangladeshi officials have made the same admission as the ambassador; that the charges are baseless and are maintained only to placate the country's radical Islamists. Bangladesh's population is about 88 percent Muslim, a figure that is growing constantly, especially as Hindus are being ethnically cleansed from that country, falling from 18 to nine percent of the population. Although radical Islamists affiliated with Al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations represent only a small proportion of the population, they have infiltrated and taken charge of almost every major institution in Bangladesh from education and banking to police and the judiciary.

For months, both sides had settled into a sort of stasis until this past fall when the Bangladeshis tried illegally to revoke Shoaib's bail and send him back to prison. The fact that we continued to frustrate these attempts could have had something to do with what happened next. On the evening of March 18, as Shoaib sat at his desk working on another edition of his newspaper, Weekly Blitz, a large contingent of armed goons from the government's paramilitary squad -- the hated and feared Rapid Action Battalion or RAB -- burst into his office. They ordered all employees out, seized Shoaib's means of contacting the outside, and began "interrogating" him.

Fortunately, his driver quickly alerted Shoaib's brother, Sohail, who telephoned me in the United States. Shoaib's life was in very real danger, so we determined on an immediate course of action. Sohail called Luke Zahner, Second Secretary at the US Embassy in Dhaka, and a long time supporter of Shoaib's. Zahner, who had previously helped set up USAID's elections support program in Iraq, notified U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Geeta Pasi.

I telephoned Kirk's office and described the events unfolding in Dhaka and their life-and-death nature to Andria Hoffman, who is Kirk's point person on the Choudhury case. "These [RAB] are bad people. I know them, and you don't even want them as friends, let alone be on their bad side. They're the kind of group where people sometimes go into their custody and ‘disappear.'"

Hoffman got to Kirk, and they set up an emergency command center in his Longworth Building office. I then called three other legislators who have been especially supportive of Shoaib: Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ), Rep. Steve Rothman (D-NJ), and Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA). Their staffs -- who had frequently worked with me on Shoaib's case -- said they would take action and coordinate further with Kirk's office.

That done, I telephoned Bangladesh's DC embassy and told them the following: "If I don't receive a telephone call confirming that Shoaib has been released unharmed and soon, you're going to have a s**t storm like you've never even imagined." Within a short time, the embassy received calls from all four members of Congress mentioned above, as well as several others who they got involved. Hoffman called the Embassy's political secretary, Sheikh Mohammed Belal on his personal cell phone, demanding action.

Cut to Bangladesh. After holding Shoaib for about an hour an a half, an RAB officer said (and I am paraphrasing here), ‘Oh look, it appears he has some illegal drugs in his desk drawer.' Now, I have known Shoaib as a brother for years, and we have spent a lot of time together. The man is simply not involved in any way with drugs. Moreover, he and I have spoken on many occasions of the paramount importance of his remaining "squeaky clean" in every way so as not to give his enemies an excuse to further persecute him. According to Sohail Choudhury, the evidence had to be planted, a tactic that RAB has been known to use rather liberally. No matter; they blindfolded Shoaib and took him to a "detention center" within RAB's office in the capital. According to Shoaib, the officers continued the verbal assault non-stop. They threatened him specifically and journalists in general for their criticism of the current military-backed government. They repeatedly called Shoaib a "Zionist spy and agent of the Jews."

At one point, Shoaib reminded them that they were violating a US Congressional Resolution that calls for an end to this sort of harassment, something with which the government said it would comply. House Resolution 64, authored by Kirk and co-sponsored by Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) calls on the Bangladeshis to drop all charges against Shoaib and end all harassment of him and his family. It passed last year by an overwhelmingly 409-1 margin. Their response was a string of expletives about the United States and the value of its resolutions.

As they approached the three hour mark, things were turning even nastier. RAB officers told Shoaib that he could expect a steady diet of this, or even worse, unless he began working for them; something that he called "ridiculous." Then the phone rang. The officers told Shoaib that the call came from "a high government official" ordering them to let him go. He phoned Sohail and asked him to bring him home.

Before they allowed them to go, however, Shoaib's captors forced the pair to sign an affidavit giving RAB the power to enter their home or business at any time and for any reason; although it should be added that it had no warrant or other sort of order when its men broke into his newspaper earlier. As such, Shoaib remains in danger, especially as his legal status remains equivocal at best.

Although Shoaib was released unharmed, the action represents a serious escalation of the government's and its Islamist cronies' attempt to silence this courageous journalist who now counts supporters on every continent. Equally important, we have learned over the years that they do these things periodically to probe us and test our resolve. They want to know if we are going to react or note. They want to know if we still are ready to defend Shoaib and other anti-Islamists or if we have lost interest.

Unfortunately, they started this false persecution on the assumption that no one would care what happened to Shoaib, and many in the government still believe that we Americans have little resolve -- and actually have told me that. And so they go after us. Our enemies count on this and point to success when they hear proposals to make concessions in Israel or to pull up stakes in Iraq and elsewhere. If we don't respond, and respond with strength, they'll continue persecuting Shoaib and others like him.

Because, in fact, the stakes go beyond even the fate of this hero. Muslim editors from Pakistan to Indonesia (and even the United States) have told us that Muslims throughout Asia are watching this case. They want to know if it is possible to stand against the radicals and prevail -- without running to the safety of the West, as they put it. If Shoaib prevails, they will be emboldened to act similarly. If we let him go down -- and that is exactly how they will see it -- they will remain silent.

When Shoaib was in prison, his brother told me that people all over the world who need a champion to save them from oppression look only one place, the United States; not to Europe; not to tyrants like Mahmoud Ahmedinejad or Fidel Castro who claim to be freedom fighters; and not to terrorist like Osama Bin Laden. When we stand with Shoaib, we reinforce their belief in us.

In the meantime, Shoaib Choudhury refuses to be silent, especially he says given all the support he received. Two days after his abuse at RAB's hands, he published another edition of Weekly Blitz. Two of its headline articles were "RAB Cocoon of Terror" and "They want to Appease Islamists." He is our ally; he is my brother; he is the bravest man I know. He is the man whom Islamists cannot silence.

Just how much international aid does Bangladesh receive annually? There were millions of dollars given freely to the cyclone victims of Bangladesh and to my knowledge is still going on. Can Bangladesh survive is the foriegn aid ends?

It is sad and tragic that the U.S. government should have to go to such lengths to protect the human rights of one individual. Obviously, Mr. Choudhury isn't alone in his views, but how can the U.S. effectively defend all of them against this sort of outrage? Perhaps a viable solution is to require countries that receive U.S. aid reaffirm the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights and simultaneously withdraw from the Islamic Declaration of Human Rights (Shariah).

Bangla Desh looks like one of the countries in the world with the worst future. The country does not have any meaningful resources like oil or metals, but it is exremely overpopulated with many illiterates and young people without enough eduacation facilities. But with the climate change to be expected large parts of the country will become flooded and no space left for the people. The situation will worsen steadily, whilst islamist and other politicians will have no answer expect praying. To me it looks much like the ancient maya civilization which died out due to an ecolocigal catastrophe. They just had no answer to the challenge. Islam faces very similar problems, but their only answer is to comit suicide bombings. It is pathetic. They are the desperados of today.

You blame the west for their colonialism, hegemonialism and arrogance? It seems that you are right. But you overlook that only the competitive countries can afford it to be arrogant. You cannot blame the others because they are stronger and more sophisticated in terms of education, production and science. Thus, Islamism and Jihadism will never be the solution of the problem because more and more people in the world are beginning to hate Islam because of people like you. No, you and your Islamism and Jihadism are not the solution of the problem, you are the problem.

The way I see it, it is the West that is to blame for islamisation with their rabid anti semitism. The US and their collaboration with terrorists through appeasement, arms and billions ; when the EU Court rules terrorists "Rights" are More Important than natives by refusing deportation to their country for "fear of torture" and such ruling to be absolute; when known terrorists are allowed to spew hatred and call for death of natives in the West with much protection; the West stands GUILTY of working with muslims for islamising the world. The Pope has shown balls where the rest of the West are in a state of pussification. The Pope baptised Italy's most prominent muslim, Allam, an iconoclastic writer who condemned Islamic extremism and defended Israel on Easter Sunday. This calculated signal sends is a dare to both mentally deranged islamists and western "intellectuals". Allam's message to all those pussies in the West: "Better to die standing on one's own feet than to live on one's knees"

It is absolutely a bad idea to support the opposition parties and individuals through governmental means and political pressures such as the one documented in this article. This in fact proves the radicals' point of view that such opposition parties and individuals ARE linked to the western governments. It makes sense for civil groups and human right organizations to support them but not congressmen; this is clear to all of the activists in the Muslim world who are standing up to dictatorships in their countries. Where were these congressmen when the Shah of Iran was torturing and killing the opposition to support freedom? And where is their support for the Egyptian bloggers when they criticize Mubarak? This is clear hypocrisy: you support the opposition when the ruling party is not serving you the best and support the ruling party when it is serving you well. If you think US is the one to rely on when it comes to fighting for your freedom, you are being absolutely clueless about the US foreign policy.

I guess the Iranians are free now according to you. And Egypt will be free when the Muslim Brothers or the Jihad movement take over. Are you living realty man? Did you know that Wahabism has inflitrated all avenues of government in Egypt. They arer treating the Christians really bad to put a soft tone on what is happening in Egypt. Look: the only good Islam is dead Islam. Islam is not a religion that can be reformed. Islam ties religion and state together. True Islam will implement true Sharia Law, which is no more than barbarism. A tuly Islamic state will put women and other religious groups as second class citizens. Wake up man. Lately, we have seen that trash of a human species Bin Laden threatening a man of peace like the Pope. Do you know why? Because he baptized a person with Islamic background. Some person left the barbaric religion and joined a religion of peace, and that got Bin Laden and Zawahiri in rage.

Now Islam is also responsible for the dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak, the puppet, who is getting billions of dollars in aid from the US to sustain his rule? I would say your logic is very twisted: you support dictators because the other options are more dangerous to your interests. Fair enough but then don't claim to be champions of human rights and freedom please! Islam dead or alive is not the point. The US would have had the same policy if Egypt or Iran were Muslim countries or Buddhist countries. The US supports only those who would pledge alligience to support her interests and the religious affiliation, respect for human rights, and freedom play no role in this policy. For example the Saudis are very fundamentalist and we can say that wahabis have played a major role in radicalizing the youth in Muslim countries but would that stop the Bush from dancing with the Saudi King and laughing at us all? This is not unexpected and that's how empires operate and survive. But it is silly to bond your cause with the US empire. The US will have no problem deserting its friends if her interests dictate so. I am pretty awake, it's you who needs to wake up!

Islam cannot produce one sane person into its fold: Because a sane person is always desperate to leave such a mad ,fanatical, murderous and depraved cult they call "Islam"; and the muslims desperately try to pull down the sane person as they stand exposed in their bigotry and duplicity! Is rthere a way out of this dangerous labyrinth? Yes, there is ,provided thousands ,if not millions, walk out of this destructive cult boldly ,showing the way out to the vast majority living in suppression and fear of fatal reprisals coming from the "islamists" who hold these unwilling millions in fear and threat of dire fatal consequences. We need thousands more of such Shoaib Choudhary to put a death knell on this evil cult "islam".

I've responded to you about Islam and other beliefs in another posting. I'll restrict this one to politics. Every nation looks for its own interest, american or not. One of the great things about the US is in the first amendment. One can believe anything he/she wants (apart from hurting others). Now tell me if Islam extends the same equality of citizens to apostates, athiests, other religious minorities. By equality, I mean, exactly like any Muslim. If your answer is Yes, you are not a Muslim my friend. Islam does not look a citizens of the society as on equal footing. This may have worked for Muhammad 1400 years ago, but it certainly won't work in our age. And pleaee, don't gear the talk to politics. There are no answers there. But there are answers when one asks if Islam is a religion like any other religion. See mt other posting for this. Peace brother.

Only Non-muslims in islamic countries know the real mindset of muslims. Islam can not be reformed. Muslims can not be rectified. Islam is a poison to the world. Western countries should stop giving diversity visa or permanent residentship to muslims. Otherwise, oneday western countries will not be able to survive. We want freedom and democracy. At least west is still there as a hope. West should be strong in holding secular democratic values, and at the same time being cautious of islam and muslims.

I hope truly that the USA will not disappoint us. It is also encouraging to know that there are congressmen and congresswomen who support Anti-Islamists. However, in order to turn the tide on Islam we will have to have greater intellectual challenges to their beliefs. So far the impact of the intellectual opposition to Islam has been no more than light scratches mainly because we are so few and our means are so limited and not because we are not providing good arguments. We need to become an avalanche that changes the landscape for good.

Perhaps, Mubark is even more Islamists than bn Laden. Did not he oppose the deal between Arafat and Israel which resulted in its failure? Mubark is more intelligent than bn Laden because he is able to extort billions of dollars from the stupid USA while promoting the cause of Islamists. Yes, Bush and many other Western leaders are completely stupid. Bush would not have danced with the Saudi King if he was not stupid. The same can be said about tens of Western leaders. Mohammed why do not come clean and admit that you are just simulating you are really good and very intelligent Muslim and it seems you must have had a lot of success in this role of yours. But you are naked taqiya man in front of me is this the reason you avoid my posts. You seem to be suggesting a worldview that as an Empire the USA will try to dominate so it would have confronted Iran and Iraq whether they were Muslims or Buddist. This is a bit stupid. If it is a matter of domination why the USA has not got the same problem and to the same degree with India, Japan or China? You are also trying to ignore the fact that Islam will beset the world (because it wants to dominate the world) no matter what other would or would not do and be. This is for you a second Taqiya move. Now let me give another alternative worldview hopefully it will set your head aright. In dealing with political dissent human mind has so far come up with only two ways. One way is the way of ideologies including religions which are the primitive or primordial ideologies. The other, which has been invented only recently after many millennia under the rule of ideologies, is liberal democracy. The ideological method consist of providing rigid moral rules and do not allow challenging them and in this way it preserves the integrity of political power. However, because of the resources that are associated with power this method should be expect to face internal and external opposition. Islam from its earliest time had the problem with external and internal opposition. Many during Mohammed’s time abandoned Islam and Mohammed ordered their murders. Mohammed himself was revelling in the resources associated with power. Thus he was taking beautiful female prisoner of war for himself and he was even so odious as to marry the wife of his adopted son. After Mohammed, his companions started killing each other over power. They even killed Mohammed’s grand children. Had early Muslims had the slightest reverence for Mohammed they would not have killed his grand children. But they knew him as just a charlatan and power hungry. What was keeping Muslims together was the prospect of looting and grabbing of resources. For this they had of course to claim moral excellence so that they can deceive the gullible and pay false homage and reverence to Mohammed. This tactic is still carrying on, and I do not know really whether you are one of the useful idiots or one of the chief charlatans (you must come clean). Of course, Islam is not the only ideology, Christianity, fascism, communism have also played similar roles. The source of the problem in the ideological system responsible for causing wars is that they impose their own morality and other who suffer from it, particularly when it does not agree with them will resist it and as they do so they might undermine the system. That is why ideological systems have always to wage wars against its detractors otherwise they will implode. (For more on this, read my book or my article particularly the one which bears the same title as my book although I must confess it is not an easy read, because I tried to condense so much in it. Otherwise, the best thing is to read the book. I will make its digital form available for free soon and hope that will give you the hidaya). The main characteristic of ideologies is that they are hierarchical because the ideological or the moral authority is confined into the hand of very few at the top. Eventually all ideological system will collapse and they may even bring its subject to the state of cannibalism. Muslims are not doing that because in fact they are able to parasite on the rest of the humanity. If in the distant future Islam prevailed and could dominate the world, then it will suffocate its subjects to the degree that they will erode, degrade the environment, economy and finally eat each other. So save yourself and humanity and stand against Islam as a human (for more details about the lengthier arguments please read my book). The other method of resolving struggle over political power is through liberal democracy. Its main characteristics are that it allows the election of its leaders through democracy or voting and to hedge against erroneous moral decision or choices it has adopted a system of rights. The freedom of expression, right to life, belief, or disbelief, some degree of economic autonomy are all necessary requirement for the running of liberal democratic system and sorting out the political power struggles peacefully. Of course, liberal democracy has not come to the world fully developed and in ideal condition. It evolved from earlier ideological system and it is still suffering from some relics of its past. However, it is progressing and reforming itself and because it does not need violence it had already made the world a wonderful place compared to what ideologies in the past have achieved. It will make the world even more beautiful and greater if monstrous ideologies like Islam moved out the way. So be a part of good rather than part of evil. This is just a short and condensed form of a theory that takes 500 pages. But I am prepared to debate you if you wanted.

Thank you for your kind advice. How can you call the Muslims human when they lack humanity. How often do the Muslims treat the Christians with respect in the Muslim countries. Just look around in Bangladesh, Pkistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Sudan and many other Muslim countries, where the Christians are oppressed and nobody in the west cares a damn. The poor Christians have to carry their cross every day and suffer the humiliation because of their faith. Does it ever bother the conscience of the Muslims? NEVER, EVER. The Christians should also be united and feel the pain of their fellow Christian brethern, just as the Muslims do. As good Muslims, they have no compassion for the Christians and they are imposing their false propoganda day and night, which is not being countered by the Christians the world over. They have to fight the fire with fire, and defeat this cult of hate, called Islam.

Brother, I hear you and I feel your pain for the plight of Chrsitians in Muslim countries. We try to do what we can for this cause as well as all other minorities under Islam. The Bahai's are treated less than animals in Iran. Ahamadi's are attacked all the time in Pakistan. The problem Is "ISLAM". By Islam, I mean the ideology, not the people. Believe it or not, many of the people we may call Muslims don't know much about the true colors of Islam, and they are the nicest to be friends with. In fact, my best friend in town that I trust with money and family is a muslim (he is not practicing by any means). But he is a great person, kind, loving, family man. Hard working too. All I am saying is lets differentiate between the ideology of hate, which we all are trying to expose, and actual human beings, many of whom are wonderful people. The plight of Christian in the Sudan, and then Black Africans, and the plight of Copts in Egypt, who are being abused by a government inflitrated by Wahabis is always on my mind. This is why we fight "Islam" on the intellectual front in our case (I live in the West right now). Peace brother

The problem is Islam. Muslims are brainwashed under the influence of islam. Islam created a mental blockade in muslims. Free thinking has stopped. There are good hearted muslim people. They happened to be born in muslim family. They got stuck in the islamic system/community. Non-muslims have to help the good muslims to come out from this evil circle. Good hearted muslims also have to take initiative to come out of islam. Difficult task. It will take time. Hope good things will happen to all the people all over the world. You are brainwashed by a mind-control CULT OF DEATH. Is there any humanity within you, Musbot? See this site =>>>>>>>> http://islamwatchers.blogspot.com
