‘Religious Defamation’ Law Would Lead to Ban of Islam

E-mail Print PDF

As the Islamic world, in the guise of the 57-member state Organization of Islamic Cooperation, continues to push for the enforcement of “religious defamation” laws in the international arena—theoretically developed to protect all religions from insult, but in reality made for Islam—one great irony is lost, especially on Muslims: if such laws would ban movies and cartoons that defame Islam, they would also, by logical extension, have to ban the religion of Islam itself—the only religion whose core texts actively defame other religions.

To understand this, consider what “defamation”means. Typical dictionary-definitions include “to blacken another’s reputation” and “false or unjustified injury of the good reputation of another, as by slander or libel.” In Muslim usage, defamation simply means anything that insults or offends Islamic sensibilities.

However, to gain traction among the international community, the OIC maintains that such laws should protectall religions from defamation, not just Islam.  Accordingly, the OIC is agreeing that any expression that “slanders” the religious sentiments of others should be banned.

What, then, do we do with Islam’s core religious texts—beginning with the Quran itself, which slanders, denigrates and blackens the reputation of other religions?  Consider Christianity alone: Quran 5:73 declares that “Infidels are they who say Allah is one of three,” a reference to the Christian Trinity; Quran 5:73 says “Infidels are they who say Allah is the Christ, [Jesus] son of Mary”; and Quran 9:30 complains that “the Christians say the Christ is the son of Allah … may Allah’s curse be upon them!”

Considering that the word infidel (or kafir) is one of Islam’s most derogatory terms, what if a Christian book or Western movie appeared declaring that “Infidels are they who say Muhammad is the prophet of God—may God’s curse be upon them”? If Muslims would consider that a great defamation against Islam—and they would, with the attendant rioting, murders, etc.—then by the same standard it must be admitted that the Quran defames Christians and Christianity.

Similarly, consider how the Christian Cross, venerated among millions, is depicted—is defamed—in Islam: according to canonical hadiths, when he returns, Jesus supposedly will destroy all crosses; and Muhammad, who never allowed the cross in his presence, ordered someone wearing a cross to “take off that piece of idolatry.”

What if Christian books or Western movies declared that the sacred things of Islam—say the Black Stone in the Ka’ba of Mecca—are “idolatry” and that Muhammad himself will return and destroy them?  If Muslims would consider that defamation against Islam—and they would, with all the attendant rioting, murders, etc.—then by the same standard it must be admitted that the hadith defames the Christian Cross.

Here is a particularly odious form of defamation against Christian sentiment, especially to the millions of Catholic and Orthodox Christians. According to Islam’s most authoritative Quranic exegetes, including the revered Ibn Kathir, Muhammad is in paradise married to and having sex with the Virgin Mary.

What if a Christian book or Western movie portrayed, say, Muhammad’s wife, Aisha the “Mother of Believers,” as being married to and having sex with a false prophet in heaven?  If Muslims would consider that a great defamation against Islam—and they would, with all the attendant rioting, murders, etc.—then by the same standard it must be admitted that Islam’s most authoritative Quranic exegetes defame the Virgin Mary.

Nor does such defamation of Christianity occur in Islam’s ancient texts only; modern day Muslim scholars and sheikhs agree that it is permissible to defame Christianity. Qatar-based “Islam Web” even issued a fatwa that legitimizes insulting Christianity.

Now consider the wording used by Muslim leaders calling on the U.N. to enforce religious defamation laws in response to the Muhammad film on YouTube, and how these expressions can easily be used against Islam:

The OIC “deplored… an offensive and derogatory film on the life of Prophet Muhammad” and “called on the producers to show respect to the religious sentiments held sacred by Muslims and those of other faiths.”

But what about the “offensive and derogatory” depictions of Christianity in Islam’s core texts? Are Muslims willing to expunge these from the Quran and hadith, “to show respect to the religious sentiments held sacred … by those of other faiths,” in this case, Christians?

Turkish Prime Minister Erodgan said the film “insults religions” (note the inclusive plural) and called for “international legal regulations against attacks on whatpeople [not just Muslims] deem sacred.”

Well, what about the fact that Islam “insults religions”—including Judaism and all polytheistic religions? Should the West call for “international legal regulations against attacks on what people deem sacred,” in the case of Christianity, regulations against Islam’s teachings which attack the sanctity of Christ’s divinity, the Cross, and Virgin Mary?

Even Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti—who a few months ago called for the destruction of all Christian churches in the Arabian Peninsula (first reported here)—is calling for a “global ban on insults targetingall” religious figures, while the Grand Imam of Egypt’s Al Azhar is calling for “a U.N. resolution outlawing ‘insulting symbols and sanctities of Islam’ and other religions.” Again, they, too, claim to be interested in banning insults to all religions, while ignoring the fact that their own religion is built atop insulting all other religions.

And surely this is the grandest irony of all: the “defamation” that Muslims complain about—and that prompts great violence and bloodshed around the world—revolves around things like movies and cartoons, which are made by individuals who represent only themselves; on the other hand, Islam itself, through its holiest and most authoritative texts, denigrates and condemns—in a word, defames—all other religions, not to mention calls for violence against them (e.g., Quran 9:29).

It is this issue, Islam’s perceived “divine” right to defame and destroy, that the international community should be addressing—not silly cartoons and films.

I am absolutely agree with you. Islam's evil doctrine should be prohibited. As we can see not all religions about peace and morality. There is islam; violent and hateful savage cult. There were other religions like islam before it; but they died out. Will todays world support religious rights of ancient vikings or azteks with thousands of human sacrifice?

The "grand mufti", "grand Imam" and all other preachers of Islam know the facts you list here very well I am sure...

What I am also sure about is that, if confronted by these same facts, they will refute them as being "taken out of context" by us "ignorants". That they were "revealed" in specific circumstances. They no longer apply to today's reality... right...

Same old story.

Simply *officially* dump Islam (or Islamism rather) in the same cesspool as fascism, Communism, bigotry and intolerance.

good point but oblivious of one fact . laws only apply to lawbiding persons. Not lawless violent savages. Blasphemy laws would be just like the hate crimes laws, they are selectivly enforced. they are designed really only to protect homosexuals. Homosexuals who commit hate crimes agaisnt christians for example are not prosecuted.

Let Islam put a mirror on itself about its history... then & now;.....all the pillages and destruction of old religions, culture and the places of worship (Persia, Khorasan, India etc...even the Bamian Buddha). Has Islam paid any compensation or as much as apologised for all the humiliation and cultural vandalism? NO...so what are they crowing on about now? It is pay back time now!

Can Muslims ever learn to respect their own kith & kin (Shias, Ahmaddiyas) in places like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or Iraq?
How come they have the sauce to complain about a film that actually depicts true events from their so called Holy book? The film does speak the truth....about the history, lies and hatred within Islam. If there is a problem about these facts it exposes the insecurity within Islam & Muslims. So let them find their own solutions. They simply cannot bury their Muslim brains in the desert sands, but face up to the truth that are slowly being exposed in their so called religion of peace;....get it?

Raymond you absolutely right in this article.Islam slowly eats all rationality.Islam must be confronted and defeated, on ideological ground. With the advent of the internet and spread of information and knowledge the truth can no longer be concealed. Freedom of speech is the greatest enemy of Islam.Muslim countries which have no freedom of expression are trying to force USA and Europe to limit it freedom of expression through united nations resolutions.People of USA and Europe you are in trouble and this is the falt of your muslim appeaser politicians. They let Muslim immigrants to come in your countries in large numbers.Force or demand from your politicians to deport a large number of criminal muslims from your countries.Muslims are mentally disturbed people, they themselves cannot live in peace and would not let the kafirs live in peace, because they are all potential terrorists and follow the Quran.Muslims claim special status for their prophet, while they claim that they respect all the prophets, they lie and deceived the kafirs. One can prove from Hadiths and Quran that they are lyeing to kafirs.

Raymond Ibrahim. Terms like Islamic world, Christian world, Hindu world etc were coined by narrow minded hate mongers.

Only God knows that who was his muslim or obedient. It should remain hidden like bank account.

"According to Islam’s most authoritative Quranic exegete, including the revered Ibn Kathir, Muhammad is in paradise married to and having sex with the Virgin Mary."

You are right Ibrahim that Ibne Kathir is revered my Muslims. But Quran does not permit any such thing rather discourages interpretations. There is no logic to support the self proclaimed self created slot of 'Islamic scholars'. No religion allows that. Jesus condemned such scholars bitterly in Gospels.

Quran is addressed direct to common people and calls them to follow it. People are not supposed to approach the 'learned' for exegesis of each point. Quran says that Quran is simple and clear, thus closing the doors for exegesis.

Ibne Kathir himself issues a certificate of his stupidity while writing of sex in Paradise. There is no endorsement of sex and reproduction in Paradise per Quran. He seems mischievous to me.

Good Ibrahim you pointed out all that and allowed thinking over.

"There is no endorsement of sex and reproduction in Paradise per Quran. He seems mischievous to me. "

This is the afterlife described by Muhannad for his faithful followers:
Q. 44:50 " As for the righteous (followers), they shall be lodged in peace together amid gardens and fountains, arrayed in rich silks and fine brocade. Even thus: WE shall WED them to dark-eyed houris. Secure against all ills, they shall call for every kind of fruit; and, having died once, they shall die no more...shielded from the scourge of hell...The supreme triumph." More of the same in Q. 52:14-25 and Q. 55:52-78

While there is no mention of any offspring from this - it is clear that "young virgins whom neither man nor jinnee will have touched before" are going to be provided for the jihadi warriors of Allah in this Bordello in the Sky. There certainly will be plenty of sex. Also lots of drunkeness and gluttonly and laughing at the poor souls who end up in Allah's hell.

This law would actually be particularly bad for us Christians.
Because since we believe that there is only one path to God, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, this law would particularly impact us because though we love people of all religions (love the sinner, hate the sin, we believe) we hate false religions.

This law would in the end prohibit Christian missionaries from preaching the gospel because no matter in how loving a manner we present it its going to be seen as insulting other religions.

Of course that isnt nothing new......this belief is present in all muslim countries anyway already but enforcement of religious defamation laws would only make things worse for people who want to see the unbeliever saved

Qur'an 70: 4 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a day the measure whereof is Fifty thousands years.

I guess the islamic term "house of war" is one of admiration for the unbelievers?

As you can see above your kooraan says a day is 1.000 years and 50.000 years. now quote me the kooraa explaining this. Not you or any other person.

as to blasphemy? How can one blaspheme something one does not believe in? Even Muslims should know that Christians do not believe in allah being their gawd? And what about allah's advice to "leave me alone to deal with the unbeliever" so why do humans then act on his behalf and punish the unbeliever?

Ibrahim is absolutely correct, but the idea can only work if you're dealing with people who have ethics and integrity. Islam and it's followers have neither. They would never agree to apply it to their situation. I see no other solution than to acknowledge that Islam is not a religion and as such must be outlawed in West. It can no longer be allowed to hide behind the protecton freedom of religion affords while it works 24/7 to destroy the societies in which it has a presence. And no, outlawing the Sharia is not enough. Islam is a disease of the mind and if allowed to exist in any form it's barbaric nature will eventually emerge.

So lets say I made another video similar to the recent one that
sparked the protests around the world. Muslims claim that I'm
"unfairly denigrating Mohamed". So the US government charges me with
this crime. What would happen? In court I would be explaining that my
video was not unfair. Which means I would have to source each one of
the things in my video.

If that happened, it means that the executive order would lead to a
worldwide (or at least nationwide) media exposure of the evidence of
all the bad stuff Mohamed and his followers did.

Sounds good to me.

> In the past year, the liberal stream in Saudi Arabia, comprising intellectuals, writers, students and women's rights activists, has grown more vociferous in its criticism of the social situation in the country, of the regime, and of the clerics. For example, in March 2012, students at several universities protested over poor study conditions and over regime corruption[1]; the same month, students circulated a petition condemning the authoritarianism of the regime and religious establishment and calling for freedom of opinion and the establishment of civil society organizations; and on May 7, 2012, liberal activists announced "Liberalism Day," an initiative to acquire recognition and acceptance for liberal ideas. In addition, there has been growing criticism of the religious police and its treatment of civilians.

There also is no sex in heaven. Heaven is not a whorehouse as the Koran would make it out to be. Jesus said THERE IS NO MARRYING NOR GIVING IN MARRIAGE in heaven for we will be pure and clean like the angels.

Please read CAREFULLY the responses to you by Truthseeker concerning Christianity.

The Son (Yah'shua/Jesus) spoke the words of his father, the one true I Am (YHVH). The Holy Spirit is a Christian's personal connection to YHVH and His Son. The first four books of the New Testament contain the life, deeds, and words of Yah'shua, the Messiah. If you want to know what Christianity is about, then read these Books/Gospels.

The RC concept of Yah'shua/Jesus being conceived without sin is fully discussed at various Roman Catholic websites - it has nothing to do with sex - but concerns the RC concept of something called Original Sin. It is much too involved with theology to get into here, but you could read up about it online if you are interested. (BTW, I am not RC, but am familiar with their teachings.)

As for your comment saying that I wrote the following:
"There is no endorsement of sex and reproduction in Paradise per Quran. He seems mischievous to me. "

I was quoting YOU - so it is YOU who "are misusing your vocabulary because of hatred." Again, I am quoting YOU - (BTW, I fail to see how this could possibly constitute "hatred" or a misuse of vocabualary.) I responded to you by quoting passages from the Qur'an which clearly define the Islamic afterlife as having lots of virgins, wine, and food for the jihadi warriors to enjoy.

Reed, research is an academic endeavor and being "wedded to research" is a figure of speech. Female companionship - and pearly little boys, for that matter - is not! Since the stories about Muhammad's and his followers give plenty of examples of raping captured women, it seems reasonable to picture them raping virgins in their ideal afterlife as well. Don't you agree?

1proudkaffur4life. You have quoted Qur'an 22: 47, 32:5 and 70:4 regarding confusion on span of day. I give here the dictionary meaning of Arabic word yaum.

English meanings of Arabic word Yaum.

1.Yaum: means day: the time from sunrise to sunset:
2.This word is also used by the Arabs to mean a certain time or era: there is no distinction in it for day or night, morning or evening:
3.It could mean an year or a century: a thousand years or even fifty thousand years: like with waqt and saa’at ,
4.After yaum ‘iz’ is added and yaumaizin almost means the same as waqtaizin and saataizin : * so, waqt, saa’a and yaum are nearly of the same meaning i.e. time:
5.The plural of yaum is ayyaam: * Ibn Faaris says yaum means day : and he has also said that figuratively it means a great thing.
6.It also means government (power) and wealth **: tilkal ayyamu nuda wiluha bainan naas: 3:139 here ayyam means government and state: **.
7.Ayyam: also appears to mean the great and unforgettable events of history: like ayyamal Arb which means waqa’il Arb **: i.e. the events of Arabia: at various places in the Qur’an ayyamul laah has come to mean this: as wa zikrihum bi-ayyamillaah: 14:5

1proudkaffur4life you write "OT clear quran Reed Wilson really?

I dont know what do you really mean. Who gave the name Old Testament to the initial chapters of Bible. Clement says that the wise men of 1st century coined this.

Please appreciate that the 'wise men' were not so wise. Testament in dictionary means a will for distribution of property of deceased. It is also a covenant. Who were they to call it as Old for contempt? Isnt it derogatory?

At the time of naming the Old Testament it was more or less as old as 2000 years. Now the so called New Testament is older than the Old then. It remains as new.

Actually it is a valid point.
The quran is full of antisemitic ,anti Christian, anti Hindu etc comments and incitements to commit violence against people who don't believe in islam.
The death cult ,apocolyptic prophecy of : all Jews must be killed before muhamad and Jesus returns - with Jesus forcing Christians to covert to islam or die ,is enough to ban the quran under most hate speech rules.

And don't waste anyone's time with ; but my tribal/country/personal interpretation of islam is peaceful. muhammad tells us peaceful muslims are hypocrites and won't receive the heavenly bounties martyrs and murderers do. muslims must kill for allah to be considered true muslims .You can play the misunderstanding game for another 1400 years while another 300 million people are murdered by muslims or face reality with every new pile of muslim victims without heads.

The biggest problem would be the UN handling any claim. They are blatantly biased, drug and sex slave dealers that can be bought cheaply .

Aasma Riaz: "Thank you so much for your book "Islamic Jihad" and showing me the "Big Picture". For 7-8 days, I was glued to your book, absorbing so much information that I did not know existed. You have crisply covered so much in your book and quoted historical references extensively. I am just overwhelmed with different emotions after reading your book..., a priceless tome."
