One Sunni School of Sharia Law Supports Female Genital Mutilation

E-mail Print PDF

It is sometimes said that female genital mutilation (FGM), widely practised by Muslims, has nothing to do with Islam, and that it is a custom which predates Islam. While FGM certainly is a custom that does predate at least Christianity and Islam, and possibly Judaism, it was made a part of one Sunni schools of Sharia law – namely the Shafi'i School. FGM is, thus, very much a part of Islam, because the Shafi'i is the dominant school of Sharia in a number of mostly Muslim countries, and is the second most popular Sunni school overall after the Hanafi.

This 2010 American medical journal article explains that the Shafi'i school says FGM is obligatory. And that is partly why female circumcision is widely practiced in Egypt, where the Shafi'i school is dominant in the North, as Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi explained in this 2011 American Spectator article.

I said "partly" in the last sentence, because FGM is also a custom that dates back to the time of pharaohs and some non-Muslim communities also practise it.

This 2007 salon.com article points out that over 95% of Egyptian women are subjected to FGM.

The Shafi'i school's support for FGM is also why an imam in Kurdistan, where the Shafi'i school is dominant, said in a 2011 sermon that mutilating women's genitals was obligatory.

And he was isolated extremist imam, because, according to this 2005 "Irish Times" article, more than 60% of Kurdish women are subjected to FGM.

So, as Muslims of all Schools all over the world increasing turn away from liberalism and adopts Islamic ways and governance – for example in Turkey, which has a large Kurdish minority, Egypt, and the Gaza strip – there will undoubtedly be a revival of FGM among Shafi'i followers of Islam, which will subject increasing number of women to this horrible practise.

And as the number of Muslims multiplies in the West with higher incidents of FGM among Muslims of the West, many Westerners think that it is racist or unfair to condemn even such horror customs, when practiced by non-white peoples. And to soften the opposition to FGM in the West, this 2010 "New York Times" article even points that the American Academy of Pediatrics are now demanding that American doctors should be legally allowed to practice a kind of genital pricking, which, they think, will persuade Muslim parents not to take their daughters abroad to perform FGM upon them.

I have a qestion, was Aisha's(the wife of muhammad) genital mutilation occured or Fatima's (the daughter of muhammad) genital mutilation occured? Is there any record about the wife and daughter genital operations of muhammad if sunni schools of thoughts believe in this kind of rubbish practices? definitely not.

You choose a right point. Even Mo himself was not circumcised. There is no instruction of circumcision in Qur'an as well. It was actually a Jew practice. Still Muslims did not hesitate to adopt that for practical cause. This proves Muslims never believe in Qur'an or Allah.

How far Muslims can reach, in the stupidity department
written by fineliving56 , January 07, 2012
Yes, Female genitals mutilation …..many Muslims would approve off it …secretly and publicly

It is a way to insure the honor of Muslim men

To save Muslim men from embarrassment if their women appeared happy when enjoyed life body and soul in their own marriage life.

It is ALL about the Muslim men …they are so occupied with them selves …they see women only an excitation of them selves …born to them, and for them …their women were born to make life enjoyable for them …nothing else.

Muslim men get jealous against their women FROM THIER OWN SELVES …
Muslim men prefer a wife who is as cold as ice toward their own selves to a women who do not .

Muslim men fear passionate women because they cannot stand even the thought their wives might leave them and go marry and enjoy them self with another husband.

Most Muslim men, might not go and actually do this crime to their wives, sisters, daughters…but they secretly like to….to feed this irrational fear and obsession of females.

They do not realize that the same Allah they always love and worship, created females that able to enjoy life just like them

I guess they are not as excellent worshipers as they like to think they are

Allah and GM

Allah or God are just used as scapegoats. These entities are believed in so you can accept the idioticy you're in when things go wrong. The mutilation of genitals occured even before the advent of islam. Because islam is manmade, these practices are man made and ordered too. Allah sais in the qur'an: obey/follow Allah, his messenger and them/he who has authority over you (king/khaleef etc). Why would i believe Allah would order such thing?
Like i said Allah/God has always been used for personal gain and or to favor a particualr group. It's politics. The so called Ulema's were rather politicians than theologists/scientists.

Perhaps "religions" were invented as political tools ,but God wasn't. Christianity isn't about religion it's about having a relationship with God. We have all distanced ourselves from God ,and the only way back to Him is through Jesus Christ. Jesus did a great deal of things in His life ,but the biggest thing He did was conquer sin ,and death. He also proved His divinity to around 500 eyewitnesses with His resurrection. We have had the eyewitness testimonies i.e. the Gospels faithfully transmitted to us so that we can know God ,and have a real relationship with Him.

Islam's female genital mulition
written by Walter Sieruk , January 09, 2012
In the book THE POLITICALLY INCORRECT GULDE TO ISLAM the auther RobertSpencer wrote on pages 76,77. "An Islamic manual states that cirumcision is required 'for both men and women.' To Sheikh Muhammad Sayed Tanyawi, the grand sheike ofal-Azhor female circumicisn is 'alaudable practice that [does] honor to women.' As the grand imam of al-Azhor wrote that it is 'the highist spriitual authority for nealy a biooion Sunni Muslims." WOW ! That a warped mentality.

I don't understand

If Islam is "the greatest religion" and a "benefit to humanity" why can't Muslims put a stop to FGM?

I forgot. FGM is halal.

Cerebrum,
I am sure you are brainwashed with "Christianity is right" as Muslims have been brainwashed with "Islam is right"
I have no qualms in accepting Jesus was a good man but not attachment of divinity and other cock and bull stories. If his miracles are to be believed so should the miracles of other religions also be. why say your book is Gospel and others are myths? Attaching divinity to the founder of religion is a political exercise to make believe.
Heaven and hell are part of "FEAR IS THE KEY" mechanism. Why faith in God is necessary if one can be good without that faith?

Are those miracles of other religions written down by eyewitnesses within a few decades of the events described? I actually have no problem with the idea of miraculous things happening in pagan cultures. I just don't believe that Zeus (or whatever other deity you want to put in there) is the one behind it. Christianity isn't about good works like other faiths. I never said hat faith in God is necessary to do what we consider as good works. Faith in Jesus is needed however in order to be forgiven your sins. During the OT times animal sacrifice was the only way to be forgiven of your sins. Jesus became the last and perfect sacrifice which He did so willingly so that we don't have to fear going to hell. When a Christian does good works it is out of gratitude towards God ,rather than fear of going to hell ,that compels him. Have you even looked at the evidence in support of the Gospels? The evidence shows that they are 100% completely reliable as history. The OT and NT are also full of very SPECIFIC prophecy (especially Messianic prophecy in the OT) that has a success rating of 100%. There are no other collection of books like this anywhere in the world. Jesus fulfilled all of the Messianic prophecies from the OT. Also Jesus' disciples were martyred for their faith (faith is not blind belief in something it actually more like trust based on past experience). People don't go to their deaths for something they truly know to be a lie. Even the Muslim terrorists out there aren't dying for what they believe is a lie ,they really believe that they will get to go to jannat ,and receive their Houris. There was also the big factor that the people who wrote the Gospels wrote them when other witnesses were still around. This means that if they were lying they would be found out immediately. I suggest you take a look at an article called "The Impossible Faith" at a website made by Tektonics Ministries (just google tektonics and the article name to find it since I can't give a direct link without the post being eaten). Not only do we have historical verification ,but this verification is of eyewitnesses ,and we have them from very shortly after Jesus was crucified(no later than 70 A.D.). I have taken a real look at the evidence ,and everything ,and I mean everything lines up with the Bible. So since everything else that can be tested shows the Bible to be accurate ,why should I not trust it when it says something about an event that can't be tested. I suggest you take a real look at what the evidence for Christianity is (and use some real scholars too). I suggest a look at a book called "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel(he was a former atheist until he tried to disprove Christianity). There are many other very good books out there ,but this is probably the best one I can recommend.

Let's just say some choose to believe certain stories and some choose not to. It doesn't make the one better than the other. Believers or nonbelievers are no necessary bad or good, especially in a secularized society. We have the law. The law doesn't demand from me to believe in God/Jesus/Allah, but it doesn't prevent me from worshipping whatever either. In this regard we should respect eachother since believing is not a crime, nor is not believing. Believing is a crime when believing itself (the ideology) threatens the law (and thus you and me) we accepted democraticcaly.

I certainly respect that everyone has the right to believe what they want to ,but the Bible isn't about stories ,it's about the truth. When the truth about something as important as someone's eternal destiny is in play ,then it is even more important that everyone has a chance to hear it and make their decision. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there ,some intentional and some not ,that leads people down the wrong path. I try to clear up any misinformation I see to the best of my ability. I don't do this for any kind of special heavenly reward like Jihadis do for their actions. The only thing I really want is to see that someday my clearing up some of this misinformation led to someone accepting Christ ,and meeting them in heaven. I also do it ,because it is part of the "Great Commission" which basically tells Christians to preach the Gospel to anyone willing to listen. Not everyone is willing to listen ,but some are ,and I do what I can to give them the correct information. We are all going to die someday. Do you truly know what will happen to you after you do? The Bible guarantees that anyone who will put their trust in Jesus has nothing to fear. The Bible is completely trustworthy on all other subjects ,so I certainly trust it on this extremely important one.

Do you really believe what islamics say about history?

In what country was fgm practiced before? ALL of North Africa was under Greco-Roman civilization. ALL of Greece was an advanced civilization. ALL of Anatolia was Greek. And the culture in Arabia Felix had free women, who conducted their own lives.

So, where ?

I'll tell you: NOWHERE...until islam!

FGM is gelding the sexual organs of a human female, for the purpose of control, same as a horse. It originated ONLY in the mind of islamic men!
