In his excellent new book "Did Muhammad Exist? An Inquiry into Islam's Obscure Origins," Robert Spencer has questioned the very existence of Prophet Muhammad. Robert bases his thesis of the non-existence of Muhammad on the following key reasons.
Quoting from Spencer:
"No record of Muhammad’s reported death in 632 appears until more than a century after that date.
The early accounts written by the people the Arabs conquered never mention Islam, Muhammad, or the Qur’an. They call the conquerors "Ishmaelites", "Saracens", "Muha- jirun", and "Hagarians", but never "Muslims".
The Arab conquerors, in their coins and inscriptions, don’t mention Islam or the Qur’an for the first six decades of their conquests. Mentions of “Muhammad” are non-specific and on at least two occasions are accompanied by a cross. The word can be used not only as a proper name but also as an honorific.
The Qur’an, even by the canonical Muslim account, was not distributed in its present form until the 650s. Contradicting that standard account is the fact that neither the Arabians nor the Christians and Jews in the region mention the Qur’an until the early eighth century.
During the reign of the caliph Muawiya (661–680), the Arabs constructed at least one public building whose inscription was headed by a cross – a symbol abhorrent to Islam.
The lack of confirming detail in the historical record, the late development of biographical material about the Islamic prophet, the atmosphere of political and religious factionalism in which that material developed, and much more suggest that the Muhammad of Islamic tradition did not exist, or if he did, he was substantially different from how that tradition portrays him.
One of the questions that must be addressed is why there is a "personality change" between the initial peaceful Mecca Surahs and later violent Surahs. If the entire Quran was cooked up after the fact, there wouldn’t be that difference – as it would all come from the same "pot"."
Throughout history, there have been many men who have pertained to be prophets of God possessing a special relationship with God including communicating with God or an intermediary. The fact that there would have been a man called Muhammad proclaiming to be a prophet around 610 AD claiming to be receiving divine teachings thru Angel Gabriel would not have been unusual.
We know that Islam is divided into 2 phases; the initial Mecca phase where Muhammad preaches peace and tolerance and the Medina phase in which the Quran becomes a violent, military manual of death and destruction bent on conquering the world for Allah, subjugating its peoples and destroying all other religions.
It is important to understand that Islam without the initial Meccan peaceful teachings would have gone to oblivion. Without the cover provided by these early teachings, Islam would have lacked any religious creditability masking the Medina call to conquest.
Prophet Muhammad was born around 570 AD in Mecca. He belonged to the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. Muhammad became a trader who married an older, rich woman. One day in 610, he claims to have met the angel Gabriel in a cave on Mount Hira. Gabriel transmits teachings from God to Muhammad. For the next 13 years, Muhammad labors as a preacher trying to convince the Jews, Christians that his God – Allah is the same God as worshipped by them and convince them and the pagan Arabs to join his new religion Islam and become Muslims. After 13 years, with his wife dead and no success in Mecca, Muhammad departs Mecca for Medina with a small band of believers where he dies. After his death, his followers collected the revelations Muhammad claimed to have received from Gabriel into the Quran. Muhammad, Islam, Allah and the Quran go to historical oblivion.
Muhammad would have disappeared from history if it had not been for the leaders of the Arab empire who near the end of the 7th century needed a religious ideology to unify the empire.
Quoting Spencer:
“Historical records make clear that toward the end of the seventh century and the beginning of the eighth, the Umayyad leaders of the Arab domains began to speak much more specifically than anyone had before about Islam, its prophet, and eventually its book. Muhammad, if he did not exist, or if his actual deeds were not known, would certainly have been politically useful to the new Arab Empire as a legendary hero. The empire was growing quickly, soon rivaling the Byzantine and Persian Empires in size and power. It needed a common religion—a political theology that would provide the foundation for the empire’s unity and would secure allegiance to the state.”
These leaders discovered that hundreds of years before there had been a preacher born in Mecca who had preached a new religion called Islam, followers were called Muslims of a God called Allah and had a book recording this new religion’s teachings. In short, they had a pre-packaged religion and their necessary “legendary hero” upon which to build the mythology of their warrior prophet.
At this point, they turned the Quran and Islam into a military ideology with their God – Allah rewarding his followers with a virgin delight Paradise for those who killed kafirs or were slain in the attempt, as many sex slaves as they could conquer, women as their property and 80% of the booty from the conquered territories. To finance the conquests, a special tax was imposed on the Jews and Christians and later the Hindus.
These new teachings were incorporated into the original peaceful Quran and the original peace teachings were cleverly utilized to give Islam its religious cloak to deceive the kafirs while the Muslim armies planned their military demise. Of course, the new Quran’s teachings abrogated Muhammad’s original Quran.
If this is so, then Prophet Muhammad was a good man who never killed, raped, terrorized, tortured anyone but tried to make a difference to his community. Prophet Muhammad after his death would have joined Gabriel in heaven.
The Muslim men followers of this new Islam created by these evil leaders upon their death would not ascend to any paradise filled with virgins but descended into hell to join not only these evil Islamic conquerors but all the other killers of history: Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc who sold their souls for power.
A WAY OUT
The bastardization of the original Quran and the creation of a monster from Prophet Muhammad life by these men of evil gives Muslim men a way out of the Islamic nightmare that now perils mankind. Muslim men could rise up and renounce these pretenders, denounce their warrior prophet fabrication and embrace Prophet Muhammad and his teachings. Unfortunately this is not going to happen.
Muslim men will never give up the benefits granted to them by these later teachings made up by these Islamic conquerors. Their women and children are their property, unlimited sex with sex slaves, child brides, unlimited booty, unlimited political power and unlimited eternal sex.
So tonight, Prophet Muhammad is in heaven to be joined by all Muslim women who having been brain washed and mentally and physically abused from their birth deserve external solace while all their sons, brothers, fathers, husbands having been born with free will have chosen to follow evil condemning their souls for all eternity.
Unmistakably historical, however, are the Arab conquests and the empire they founded. Every empire of the day was anchored in a political theology. The Eastern Roman Empire was Christian; the Persian Empire was Zoroastrian. The realm of political theology offers the most plausible explanation for the creation of Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran. The Arab Empire controlled and needed to unify its huge expanses of territory, where different religions predominated. Islam began as an umbrella monotheistic movement that presented itself as encompassing the true forms of the two great previous monotheistic movements, Judaism and Christianity.
Whatever be the truth about his existence, Muhammad, as presented in his actions outlined in the Quran, Hadiths, and Sira, was one of the most diabolically evil persons in history. Such an evil incarnate can never be a representative of the supreme creator of the Universe. Even if one claims that Muhammad was thoroughly bastardised by his later followers, it is impossible that a true prophet of the omnipotent God could be so badly bastardised by earthly man to the point of making him the most evil ever. So, Muhammad was never a prophet of God, period!

Spencer is wrong in stating that Meccan Quran is peaceful. If you look at it closely it threatens kafirs with dire consequences. What about the sealed letter supposedly sent by Muhammad to the Byzentine emperor? Is that forged?

I would say that the fact that the quran was redacted in such a disorder, without proper correction of errors, contradictions and inconsistencies by the early islamic rulers provides evidence that the islamic rulership still suffered a lack of religious and political symbols and religion was not the main issue. It was more a military victory and not a religious one. The population was more concerned about taxes and enjoyed much lower taxation than before.
We must consider that both christianity and islam were still different by this time and very much of islam is influenced by the hadith. There are also some scholars suggesting that zoroastrism influenced islam from persia. Anyway, islam became a political ideology much later when the rulers were in need for it in order to provide a legitimation for their rulership.

Whether Mo existed or not is irrelevant. The stories exist. The stories tell us what Muslims want us to believe about their leader. The stories tell us that Mo was a liar, looter, rapist, murderer and a paedophile. These characteristics, in the Muslim "mind", are laudable. That's really all we have to know about Islam.

There are only 3 possibilities concerning Muhammad.
1.He never existed. Islam, Muhammad, Quran were manufactured by these late 7th century Islamic rulers as mentioned by Spencer.
2, He existed and all Quranic teachings were from him. The Quran was the creation of this Muhammad.
3. He existed as a failed preacher who created a religion Islam, God – Allah and initial Quran. Tried in his early teachings to convince Jews/Christians/pagans of his prophetship with his early peaceful teachings and went to historical oblivion until these 7th century rulers grabbed onto his Islam, Allah, Quran and changed it into a military manual of conquest. All teachings of Muhammad leading armies into battle etc were fabricated later by the late 7th century rulers. Verse 4.3 would have been part of that fabrication mentioned by Spencer.

I think Surah 4 is a Medina surah.
The Mecca Surahs (23: 5-6) and (70: 29-30) are sanctioning sex with female slaves/captives (even more clear than surah 4:3)

I would suggest that the question where the texts originated is not the main issue.
Some texts even supposed to come from Mecca aree very closely related to already existing texts from bible, apokrypha. talmud and maybe other sources. For example, THE CAVE (Surah 18) quite obviously derived from christian sources such as the Legend of the Seven Sleepers and The Alexander Romance. Muhammad did not invent these stories, they were already existing before and somebody wrote them down. And there is not (only) Muhammad behind it but other people as well, maybe even some jewish or christian scholars as some sources suggest.
Whatever happened during early islamic history, it was quite different from what the islamic tradition is telling us. Perhaps Muhammad was not so important during his lifetime but later, he was raised to heaven by the muslim rulers who were in need for such a hero.

If Islam didn't have a 'kill or die for heaven' theology, it would probably not have been able to conquer Persia which it did between 630 and 650. This is because without such a theology, the arab warriors would not have had anything to fight for except booty and personal glory. Given the organization and size of the Persian forces at the time, I don't see how the arabs would have done as well as they did without that. Thus I think at least part of the Medinan koran must have been extant in some form by then.

My view is that even before Muhammad the arabs already had adapted some jewish and christian traditions and twisted it in order to make it more acceptable to them.There seems to be some jewish-christian influence here, regarding Jesus not as son of god and ignoring anything coming from Paul and his helenistic christianity.
Thats why I would say that early islam was not so far away from christianity but many embraced islam because of lower taxes. Islam was constituted and institutionalised much later when the law schools were establisehd and the hadith invented. I do not know exactly but I think this happend under perisan influence because christianity did always separate between relgion and law as well as rulership.

If we look at a Surah like Joseph (Surah 13) then it is almost word by word taken from the bible. How could Muhammad claim that this is "his" revealation? Stories like this (Lokman, Maria etc.) were probably circulating everywhere in the region for centuries. We know that there already lived many chrisitan arabs and perhaps this is why the quran and hadith refer to jews and christians as people with the book while the arabs were the people without book. However, the arabs were handing down the texts orally and I do not think that many of them were totally new to them when Muhammad "revealed" them.
Perhaps Muhammad "revealed" some early texts from Mecca but others were probably written down by others. The quran looks much more like a collection which was compiled in a hurry when Muhammad was already dead and raised to heaven by his followers..

I agree with you entirely that even christianity and judaism are fabrications of a group of people who wanted political power that can be easily usurped by putting "the fear of 'God' in all gullible people . So does all religions. But the worst ones are the organised monotheistic cults with its heirarchy of clergies who call the shots and claim the "divine right" to rule over everyone with "iron hands" . Religions are nothing but fairy tales for the adults who fear "death" ( nobody lives forever and nothing lasts forever , which is the simple truth) and hope that they live on forever after they die in some spooky "heaven" that is well provided with all material comforts ,especially the drinking and debauching aspect. Allah, according to Quran , keeps giving better verses that will abrogate the earlier verses. That means that this Allah is not sure what he is mouthing out of turn all the time . Muslims often quote the two verses "there is no compulsion in religion" and "killing one man is equal to killing the whole of humanity...." to cover up the inconveniently blatant verses of hate , intolerance and violence. Does that mean that these two verses have abrogated all the other violent verses in the Quran. Then these verses should be edited out of Quran. This will reduce the Quran from 6,600 verses to less than 300 verses. Allah's book will look puny and Muhamad's life will be wasted . Muhamad will be the biggest "blasphemer" of Allah. Hahahahahaha...!

Can some body re-arrange theQuran in proper order starting with Meccan Suras and ending with last Suras of Madina.Quran is so complicated for a simple person like me.It is like PANJABI TAPAS where the first line has no connection with the second line.Here is an example in English translation.WHITE COCKERAL IS ON THE WALL. Islamic Law is supposed to come from god. However, all fatwas are made by muslim humans and they cannot provide any evidence that their claim to apply law in the name of god is correct. This is not only the worst blasphemy we can imagine but also absolutely not adequate for any 21th century society.

I thought I know all the debunks out their to Quran's claims .. But I have to admit ...I never thought about this one before, I just read about on the internet … and it was so obvious, I had a Moment of "AHAAAA ''
I am sorry it has nothing to do with article except it is being about Islam.
Quran claims, in so many places, like [ 43/11 - 32/27 and many others ] that the land where Muhammad lived, is,was and will be a desert, lacked water for all times until Allah who brings rain to quenched it's thirst .[BTW …snow was not mentioned not even once in Quran even it covers vast portion of lands ]
But the fake Quran [ as it never came from any God] and who ever wrote it, did not know about the fact that the exact region of the where Muhammad lived once being a TROPICAL CLIMATE with more water then any, would need or want from it's abundance .
To me, this is another nail in the coffin of Islam … may be people have known that … but truthfully I did not think about it before and when Iread it, I just laugh at Muhammad and his ignorance and his limited perceptions.

Most people passing comments here seem to have presumptions and hatred against Islam which should not be the basis of analyzing a religion or its scriptures. Rather one should have open mind and logic to analyze a religion. The other day I was visiting an Islamic web page where Hinduism and religions are portrayed as null and void. Again presumption and hatred. Every single seems to claim itself to be the most holly, purest, absolute, logical and, the one only truth. The very basis of such a notion is presumption. If you are really a truth seeker come out of the old box and come to logic.

Islamic tradition states that on June 8 in 632, Muhammad died while cursing the Jews and Christians:

There are no records of Mecca being a pilgrimage site or a commercial center. Because of its location in Western Arabia, it was hardly likely to be a crossroad for commerce.
A coin struck by the first Arabian conquerers between 647 and 658 does bear the inscription muhammad – but this is a figure carrying a cross! – which certainly does not jibe with Islam as we know it.
The first attempt to record stories about Muhammad (“hadiths”) did not begin until the 8th century, under the 5th Umayyad caliph, Abd al-Malik; this project continued on into the 9th century, when the first biography of Muhammad was authored by Ibn Ishaq. All subsequent biographies have been based on Ibn Ishaq’s very late-appearing work.
Ibn Ishaq’s biography goes into great detail about the birth, childhood, adulthood, marriage, visions, raiding campaigns, marriages, etc, but also is peculiarly replete with miracles attributed to Muhammad. This is peculiar because the Qur’an (29:51) asserts that Muhammad did not perform miracles, because the Qur’an itself was a sufficient miracle to convince believers.

Robert Spencer has been studying islam for these years to expose what you muslims describe as a *perfect* religion and has successfully proved that as well as not being a religion at all, it is so full of holes that it doesn't hold water.

The story of Joseph and his brothers (Q.12.4-) is nothing more than a bunch of garbled nonsense that only VERY faintly resembles the original story. According to the Qur'an, Joseph's brothers plan this murder in advance; they take Joseph with them so he can play saying they will watch over him and then they leave Joseph in a well to die. Some caravan traders find Joseph in the well - purely by accident - and the brothers, thinking that Joseph will die in the well, tell their father that Joseph was killed by wolves.
Without the original Bible story, we would not know that it was Joseph's father who sent Joseph to check up on his brother's; possibly suspecting they were up to no good. Joseph finds them in Dothan, a Canaanite town, probably painting the town red (temple prostitution was common among the Canaanites) instead of taking care of the family sheep herd. The errant brothers decide to kill Joseph (except for Reuben, who planned to rescue him) by throwing him in a pit so he couldn't tell on them to their father, Jacob; but, instead, one of the brothers - Judah - talks them into selling him for 20 pieces of silver to a passing caravan of Midianites who were heading down to Egypt with their camels bearing spices and myrrh. Then the brothers kill a baby goat and put the blood on Joseph's coat to show to their father. (Gen. Ch 37-47)
The Biblical story not only contains information that directly relates to future events, it also speaks directly to the very human condition of doing things we know are wrong, and then doing even worse things to cover up our trangression.
The Qur'an version, on the other hand, has Joseph's brothers committing cold-blooded, pre-meditated murder out of jealousy - and then justifies murder, even of one's relatives. This is a Cain murdering Abel situation, and entirely without consequences! No hellfire and damnation from Muhammad's god. No threats of punishment in this life - and then in the hereafter as well!! Nothing. NADA. Not a word. Not at all like what Muhammad's stone-gawd promises will happen to apostates, hypocrites, adulterers, and anyone who doesn't prostrate to his royal stone-gawdness 5 times a day!
The story of Mariam (Maria) is likewise an invented, distorted, contrived concoction that bears NO resemblance to the Biblical story -- What-So-Ever.
