My View of Islam

The western world would be wise to recognize the realities of Islam, a religion laid down in writing over a millennium ago with violence and oppression at its heart.
The undisputed definition of Islam by all her adherents is "submission to the will of Allah." This divine will is outlined in the Koran and in the teachings and deeds of Muhammad, as recorded in the Hadith or Sunna.
- While the Koran is considered to be the true, undiluted word of God revealed to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel, the Sunna carry less weight and have always been a cause for disagreement amongst Muslim scholars. Theologians of Islam have, however, reached consensus on the authority of a set of six volumes from the Sunna called the Sahih Sita, or authentic six.
On the issues of holy war (jihad), apostasy and the treatment of women, the Koran and Sunna are clear. It is the obligation of every Muslim to spread Islam to unbelievers first through dawa, or proselytizing, then through jihad, if the unbelievers refuse to convert. It is the obligation of the unbelievers to accept Islam. Exempted from this edict of conversion are the people of the book: Christians and Jews. Both peoples have a choice. They may adopt Islam and enjoy the same rights as other Muslims, or they may stick to their book and lead the life of a dhimmi (lower citizen). Legally, the rights of the dhimmi are not equal to those of a Muslim. For instance, a Muslim man may take a Jewish or Christian wife, but Jews and Christians are not allowed to marry Muslim women. If a Christian or a Jew kills a Muslim man, they should be killed immediately. In contrast, the blood of a Muslim should never be shed in recompense for the blood of Christians or Jews.
It is also the obligation of every Muslim to command virtue and forbid vice. Apostasy, the worst possible vice a Muslim can commit, should be punished by death. The punishment need not be carried out by a state, but can easily be enforced by civilians. When it is a question of Islamic law, justice is in the hands of every Muslim.
As for the treatment of women, in the Koran and more elaborately in the Sunna, Islam assigns to girls a position in the family that requires them to be docile, makes them dependent on their male relatives for money and gives dominion over their bodies to these same male kin.
In Islam there is a strict hierarchy of subservience. First and foremost, all humans are required to be the slaves of Allah. In Muslim societies, all children must obey their parents. Beyond this, women and girls must obey and serve without question their male guardians and especially their husbands. This decree of marital obedience is not in any way reciprocal.
A woman in Islam is not competent and must always have a guardian. The responsibility of guardianship may pass from father to brother to uncle before a girl is married off, at which point she must answer to her husband. Marriage is typically arranged, with no choice given to the girl, and there is often an exchange of money in the process. Thus, under the religious rule of Islam, it is still common today that a woman's rights are essentially sold to a man she may not know, and most likely does not love.
As for education of girls under Islam, there is a clear program of indoctrination of inequality. Under Islam, education is the passing on of the rules of submission to the will of Allah. Intrinsic in this "education" is the dictation of gender roles. Girls are instructed in subservience first to God, then to the family and finally to the husband. There is strict emphasis on modesty, defined by virginity. A Muslim girl is taught to guard fiercely her virginity as an expression of loyalty to her creator and to her family and husband.
This form of education hampers her chances of ever becoming self-reliant or financially independent. A woman's lack of social equality and freedom is a direct consequence of the teachings of Islam. Under Islam, a wife must always ask her husband for permission and she must obey indefinitely. This stricture is lifted in the unique event that he asks her to forsake God, wherein she is allowed the right of disobedience. While it is true that in Islam, technically speaking, women have the right to trade and own property, the condition of total obedience to guardians makes this "freedom" hypothetical, at best.
The goal of education given to girls under Islam is the achievement of control over female sexuality. The result of this indoctrination is that Muslim girls believe legitimate and often vocally defend their position of subordination. The lengths a Muslim society will go to in the pursuit of sexual control often cross into the territory of the absurd and, by western standards, criminal. In Islam the minimum age of marriage for a girl is after her first menstruation. Muhammad was engaged to his wife Aisha when she was six years old, and he married her (had intercourse with her) when she turned nine. Millions of Muslim men across the world follow Muhammad in this deed, one of the most prominent examples being the late Ayatollah Khomeini.
Under sharia law (Islamic law), such as governs in Saudi Arabia, Iran and parts of Nigeria, the civil rights of women are dramatically reduced. Threat of violent punishment in the form of whipping and stoning makes the prospect of financial independence and sexual freedom for women all but impossible. Miraculously, even in such harsh circumstances you will find women who are relatively well educated, have some say in choosing a husband and manage to earn a living. Let us be clear that these exceptions are due to the compassion and progressiveness of families who have been influenced by the West, and not to rules derived from Islam.
In the quest for reconciliation between Muslim and western societies, it is important to recognize that Muslims are as diverse as Islam is monolithic. Islam attempts to unify more than a billion people of different geographical origins, languages, ethnicities, and cultural and educational backgrounds into one religious tribe. And while I acknowledge that generally stereotyping believers is difficult since belief is subjective, for the sake of discussion I would like to distinguish between five types of Muslims.
The first group includes those Muslims who leave the faith because they cannot reconcile it with their conscience or with modernity. This group is important for the evolution of the Islamic world because they ask the urgent and critical questions believers usually avoid. Ex-Muslims living in the west are just beginning to find their voice and to take advantage of the spiritual and social freedoms available to them.
The second group is comprised of genuine Muslim reformers, such as Irshad Manji, who acknowledge the theological out-datedness of the Koranic commands and the immorality of the prophet. They tend to emphasize the early chapters in the Koran urging goodness, generosity and spirituality. They argue that the latter chapters wherein Islam is politicized and the concepts of sharia, jihad and martyrdom are introduced should be read in the context in which they were written, some 1,400 years ago.
The third group is made up of those Muslims who support the gradual perpetuation and domination of Islam throughout the world. They use the freedoms offered in democracy to undermine social modernity and, though initially opposed to the use of violence, foresee that once the number of believers reaches a critical mass the last remnants of unbelievers may then be dealt with in violence, and sharia law may be universally implemented. Ayatollah Khomeini used this method successfully in Iran. Erdogan of Turkey is following in his footsteps. Tariq Ramadan, deeply rooted in his Muslim Brotherhood heritage, is devoted to such a program among European Muslims.
The fourth group is the most obvious and immediately threatening. In this group we find a growing number of hard-line Muslims who have defined martyrdom as their only goal. This is an army of young men whipped into a frenzy of suicidal violence by power hungry clergy. These clergy have public platforms and work with impunity from institutions untouched and often funded by national authorities.
The fifth group is largely ineffective and only threatening in their refusal to acknowledge the truth. Here we find the elite clergy who make a show of trying to reconcile Islam with modernity. They are motivated by self-preservation and have no interest in true reform. They take selective passages from the holy books to make a case for a peaceful Islam, ignoring the many passages inciting violence, such as those verses which command the death of apostates.
It is through the first two of these five groups that progress and reform will come. As for the rest, the western world would be wise to recognize the realities of Islam, a religion laid down in writing over a millennium ago with violence and oppression at its heart.

Very interesting article. I have only seen violence in islam. I hope a day will come when I see peace within. Until then the world has to confront muslims from the 3rd group, the most dangerous type.If they can be controlled the 4th and 5th groups will no longer exist. The 4th and 5th are there due to the boldness of the 3rd group type. Testing times for all, islam will succeed only to fail.

She forgets a large group: those who say they believe, but in reality are non-believers within muslim communities. Those who would like to stand up but cannot do so because of death threats. Maybe even a *large majority* of muslims is "trapped" in this way. They are "infidels" but they pretend to believe out of fear. This could only be examined by really anonymous polls.

What is the good that comes out of Islam? Uniting some people into groups and a few spiritual practices that gives peace to the heart. These things can be found out of Islam too if one has a thirst for knowledge and is willing to look at ALL the information available in the world. There are so many bad and cruel practices in Islam on the other hand, that a sensible good person would leave it if they are allowed to.

It's not clear how Muslims who leave the faith can ever reform it. They've left. What is there for them to reform? The second group, the genuine reformers, needs to find a way to let us distinguish them from the remaining groups. Otherwise, if we are to recognize and (I assume) defend ourselves from the realities of Islam, there is but one course: deny access to all Muslims from all lands. We cannot tell the reformers from the jihadists. Unless the Muslims will self-identify, each and every one needs to be kept out of Western societies. Those already living here who leave for any reason cannot be allowed to return. Our own survival may depend on it.

Very interesting article although I have personal reservations about the simplistic penta-startification of today's Muslims. The ex-Muslims/apostates and the fanatics are the only two "authentic" categories, they both are clear, defined and consistent. As an apostate myself, I find the other transitional and oscillating categories more dangerous since they attempt to disguise reality and dilute the truth. They postpone the inevitable change and protract any meaningful evolution.

To Ann Mochla your dissertations about nonmuslims only shows how ignorant you are. From what I know your religion, it condons wife-beating, slavery, the persecution of nonmuslims, death to ex-muslims for their apostasy, cruelty as a capital punishment, rape of nonmuslim women, child marriage, and the death penalty for adultery. In the west wife-beating is a crime, slavery was abolished almost 200 years ago, people are entitled to freedom of religion, rape is a crime, the treatment of criminals in a humane matter, child pedophilia is a crime, and adultery while it is morally wrong, it is not a crime punishable by death.

it is obviuos for me why you left islam, as you don't seem to know its basic concept. please allow me as a muslim to clear some points.and please notice that I am ordered as a muslim to talk in a very gentle way to any non-muslim or anyone who converted from islam and I am not ordered to kill him as you said in your article. first jihad is not by any way a method for spreading islam, it is a way to defend the muslim nation if it is attacked (only if attacked). second : Jews and C hristians are not of a lower level as you said, but they live among muslims practicing their religions, having their own laws (from their own religion). third: apostasy`s punishment was death during a particular time only in the islamic history when the community was still weak and attacked by pagans, but now as islam is strong this is not applied if the person who converts from islam leaves the muslim community then he is not put to death. I think you are a good example, as you converted , and you are alive.

allow me to add to my points another comment. about the women`s rights that you say islam has taken away their rights and their sexual freedom. I will admit you are right only if you tell me one benefit the women gained from gaining their sexual freedom and their rights. don`t you watch the american shows on T.V. when a women comes to the studio with 4 men claiming that one of them is father of her baby. is that freedom in your opinion? .teenagers pregnancy , sex between young children at schools, chidren abuse and rape. do you see all these as benefits of women`s sexual freedom? I don`t think that any religion who tames the human nature and put it in a decent, noble, clean form is a bad religion. whether that was islam or any other religion.

Do not forget that Ayaan Hirsi Ali has had numerous death threats made against her, including one stabbed into the chest of Theo van Gogh. She is alive because of 24x7 security, not because of the mercy of Muslims. I do understand that all Muslims are individuals and not every Muslim is about to attack her or kill her or believes it to be proper, but it only takes one true believer to act on such a threat and honor the commandments of Allah and Muhammad.
Speaking of Muhammad, you talk about jihad being used to defend a Muslim nation and not to spread Islam. However, the example and history of Muhammad speaks volumes against this. Muhammad was personally involved in over 70 battles/sieges and only one of those was defensive (the Battle of the Trench -- and even then, the Muslims were attacked because the Meccans were tired of Muhammad's constant attacks upon them and their trade caravans, so the Muslim attacks led to that attack). Muhammad went to Medina peacefully and within 10 years had eradicated the Jews, including 600-900 Banu Quarayza he beheaded himself despite the fact they had not killed a single Muslim. Islam was clearly spread by the sword during Muhammad's time and after his death the Islamic crusades began to spread it more. Go research history and you'll discover how many millions have died in the name of Allah (hint: try finding the fate of the Hindus in India for starters).
As for your commentary on American TV shows. I agree, it is horrible when stuff like that happens (and shouldn't be on TV, but it is a free country and I choose not to watch it), but the fact it happens to a subset of the population is no reason to condemn everyone else to stifling restrictions on freedom. And even if someone gets pregnant in high school, they still have every chance to make something of their lives. And why are you getting upset about women becoming pregnant? Every child born is the will of Allah if you are a Muslim:

Volume 3, Book 34, Number 432: Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: that while he was sitting with Allah's Apostle he said, "O Allah's Apostle! We get female captives as our share of booty, and we are interested in their prices, what is your opinion about coitus interrupt us?" The Prophet said, "Do you really do that? It is better for you not to do it. No soul that which Allah has destined to exist, but will surely come into existence.
The Islamic track record on things like women being beaten and raped is horrible. In America, it is a crime when that happens. In Islam, it is the woman's fault. And it doesn't help that Muhammad raped women and encouraged his men to rape women (the booty) they obtained in the 70+ battles. It also doesn't help that Muhammad married a 6 year old and that Allah condones child brides. No woman deserves to be beaten or raped and no child deserves to be interrupted playing with her dolls to have a 50 year old man have sex with her.

MICHEAL, I was so interested in your reply, but allow me to clear some points, you mentioned that converts are under security to protect them from being killed by muslims. I agree that the majority of muslims did not learn their religion and they miss many of their rulings. and belieave me I knew this opinion (of not killing a convert if he leaves away ) from a well-learned muslim scholar. As for the 70 battles you mentiond allow me to correct this. The prophet participated in only 9.all of them were meant to defend the muslims. the battle of Badr:to gain back the money and the belongings that the muslims had to leave and escape from the torture of the pagans. the battle of uhud: the pagans came with an army to revenge for their defeat in badr. the battle of khaibar: when the Jews broke their treaty with the muslims during their war with the pagans and wanted to fight along the pagans.the battle of hunain: after all arab tribes converted to islam, two tribes (hawazin and thaqif) joined together in a big army trying to defeat the muslims and stop the spreading of islam. YOU mentioned in your reply that "muslims` attacks led to the attacks", then can this mean that the israeli attacks on arabs jusify their attacking back? and the american attacks on the iraqis justify their responding in violence?....what I WANT TO SAY IS THAT you give excuse for fighting back if one is attacked and this way you have given ppl like Al-qaida the excuse to fight and attack the countries that interfer with them. That doesnt mean im anti British or anti western. What people are missing is that islam is a religon of peace. It teaches to be kind to people, give to the needy, help the disadvantages and so on. The author is the actual one with a problem painting a very dark religon with extreme views and very conservarte ideology. In fact she is the one stoking up religious hatred with her anti islamic views. If a muslim was too say the same thing about a judasim he be called anti semitic or another terriost.

I'm not sure whether anybody is still looking at this sight, but I was extremely disturbed by the high number of assumptions that I found in this article and in the comments posted. First of all, I am neither a Muslim nor an ex-Muslim, but I have done my research on Islam, however, would say I am so extremely far from an expert. However, what I do know, is that if you are going to write an article it should not be one with the harsh, implicite and uncited statements like the ones I read above. I believe the most dangerous plague in society is not the Islamic religion, but ignorance. And ignorance is rooted in not only some religious people, but ANY PERSON WHO WILL MAKE IRRATIONAL STATESMENTS, without first thoroughly looking into the subject...such as I've read on this page. In fact, if you really want to know what you should be frightened of, take a look at this website.
